The rare severe cold after the historic winter storm that hit the southern regions of the US this week will continue until Sunday, leaving the region in the grip of extremely cold and icy conditions, creating dangerous driving conditions, Reuters reported, quoted by BTA.
The cold has spread from Houston through New Orleans and the "Panhandle" from Florida to the coast of South and North Carolina, blocking motorists on closed highways for several days and nearly stopping traffic in cities, bringing snow, sleet and freezing rain.
The winter storm headed out to sea overnight after leaving record snowfall in the region.
The city of Milton, located in the Florida Panhandle, received 9 inches (23 cm) of snow, while New Orleans was blanketed by 8 inches (20 cm), while 9 inches (23 cm) of snow accumulated in parts of the outer coast of North Carolina.
