Russian diplomats will not attend the events organized by Poland to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Nazi concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau in Auschwitz, the Russian Ambassador to Warsaw Sergey Andreev told RIA Novosti.

On January 27, events will be held in Auschwitz to mark the 80th anniversary of the liberation of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration camp, and a number of foreign guests are expected to arrive. The ambassador explained that theoretically Russian representatives could be present there, but they will not do so due to the traditional distortion of historical truth by the West.

"They published a message that there will be events - whoever wants, let them go. Theoretically, we can, of course, appear there, but attend an event at which no one will remember who liberated the Auschwitz concentration camp and Europe... We don't need it. We will mark this anniversary in our own circle and appropriately," the diplomat said.

Auschwitz-Birkenau is the largest Nazi death camp and has become one of the main symbols of the Holocaust. Between 1941 and 1945. about 1.4 million people died there, including about 1.1 million Jews.

The Red Army entered the camp on January 27, 1945.

In 1947, a museum was established on the site of the former Nazi concentration camp. In 1979, it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
