Bundestag Budget Committee wants to secure approval for additional 3 billion euros in military aid for Ukraine - 1

The Bundestag Budget Committee wants to secure approval for the allocation of an additional 3 billion euros in military aid for Ukraine, Reuters reported, citing its sources.

According to them, the committee has asked German Finance Minister Jörg Kukis to allocate the additional funds.

Members of the parliamentary committee told the agency that the request was approved by representatives of the conservative Christian Democratic Union and the Free Democratic Party of Germany, according to whom there is enough money in the country's budget for additional funding for Ukraine. Meanwhile, the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Greens abstained from voting.

The German Finance Ministry declined to comment, Reuters reported.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz made it clear that he did not expect a decision to provide additional military aid to Kiev before Germany's snap parliamentary elections, scheduled for February 23. He confirmed that he would approve additional arms supplies to Ukraine only if the debt brake (a rule that prohibits spending more money from the budget than comes in) was released to allow this. The opposition bloc of the CDU/CSU, the Free Democratic Party of Germany and the Greens want to finance additional arms supplies through unplanned budget spending before the federal elections.

Germany is the second largest supplier of weapons to Ukraine after the United States. Germany has already provided military support to Kiev and has committed to future spending of approximately 28 billion euros. In accordance with the 2025 budget agreement, Germany is to allocate around 4 billion euros for military support to Ukraine, which is half the amount in 2024. However, the budget has not yet been approved by the Bundestag.
