The power supply to the Iberian Peninsula was fully restored at around 07:00 local time this morning after the major accident that began yesterday at around 12:30 local time, the Spanish news agency EFE reported, BTA reported.
In addition, according to data from the energy network operator company “Red Eléctrica“ and the Ministry of Ecological Transition, 100% of the substations of the power transmission network are now in operation.
Employees of the Electricity Management Center are continuing restoration work so that the situation can return to normal as soon as possible after the massive power outage that affected the entire Iberian Peninsula. It came after the sudden loss of 15 gigawatts of electricity for just five seconds for reasons that are still under investigation.
The country is gradually recovering from the outage, which was described as an "absolutely exceptional" incident and was accompanied by widespread disruption to mobile communications and disruption to commerce, industry and, above all, the transport network.
The blackout led to the suspension of all rail services by all transport companies, with a total of 116 trains and 30,000 users affected, while suburban train and metro services in major cities were paralysed.
The blackout was caused, figuratively speaking, by the "sudden disappearance" of 15 gigawatts of electricity, which represented 60% of the electricity in Spain's grid at the time. According to “Red Eléctrica“ this was caused by a strong fluctuation in the power grid, accompanied by a “very important“ loss of generating capacity, but it is not yet possible to determine what exactly caused this.
Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said that the “potential“ causes of the massive power outage were still being analyzed. He said he was not ruling out “any hypothesis“. Meanwhile, a spokesman for Portuguese grid operator REN said this morning that Portugal's electricity grid was “fully stabilized“, Portuguese news agency LUZA reported.
“All substations of the national transmission network have been restored“ and “we can confirm that the network is fully stabilized“, the spokesman said. The Portuguese government announced that electricity supplies to all 6.4 million consumers in the country had been restored and train services had been restored.
