Romanian Prime Minister: I will resign - 1

I will propose to my colleagues that the Social Democratic Party (SDP) leave the ruling coalition and that I resign as prime minister, Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said, quoted by Ajepress, BTA reported.

„This coalition was formed with two goals. One - to form a government; and the second - to have a common candidate for the post of president of Romania. One of the two goals was not achieved - to have a common candidate to become president of Romania. Crin Antonescu did not enter the second round. Therefore, the coalition agreement was not fulfilled. Today I will propose to my colleagues that the SDP leave this coalition. "If my colleagues vote to leave the coalition, it is natural that I, the prime minister of the coalition, resign from the position of prime minister," Ciolacu said at the PSD headquarters.

International observers present at the first round of the presidential elections in Romania gave a positive assessment of the way in which the vote was organized and conducted yesterday, the Permanent Electoral Authority reported, quoted by Agerpres.

“The elections were held in an atmosphere of honesty, integrity and transparency, fundamental values for the course of a consolidated democracy,” the observers stated, noting that the electoral rights of all citizens were respected.

Among the 159 international observers accredited by the Permanent Electoral Authority for the presidential elections are a number of international partner organizations from all over the world, as well as representatives of the diplomatic missions in Bucharest of the United States, the United Kingdom, Kingdom, Canada, France, Norway, Sweden, Hungary, Turkey and Kazakhstan.

“Election observation is a common practice at international level, which aims to guarantee the transparency of the electoral process and to confirm the proper functioning of the institutional mechanisms involved in the organization and conduct of the vote“, the Permanent Electoral Authority of Romania stated.

They also noted the conclusions of the representatives of the US Federal Election Commission, who also observed the vote, that the presidential elections in the country were held in accordance with international democratic standards and reflected the commitment of the institutions involved in their organization to free and fair democratic processes.

The presidential election observation program in Romania, organized by the Permanent Electoral Authority, took place between 2 and 5 May.
