Romania's interim president accepts prime minister's resignation, caretaker prime minister to be appointed tomorrow - 1

Romania's interim president, Ilie Bolognese, has accepted the resignation of Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu this evening, Romanian media reported, quoted by BTA. A caretaker prime minister will be appointed tomorrow in the first half of the day, Digi 24 television reported.

"The president has accepted the resignation from the post of prime minister of the Romanian government, submitted this evening by Marcel Ciolacu. An interim prime minister will be appointed in the first half of tomorrow," the presidential administration announced after a meeting between Bolognese and Colaccu.

Earlier today, the Political Council of the Social Democratic Party decided to leave the ruling coalition, and Prime Minister Marcel Colaccu to resign from the post of prime minister, Agerpres recalls.

„The ruling coalition has no legitimacy, at least in its current composition. I have proposed to my colleagues to leave the coalition, which would lead to my resignation as prime minister - something I will do after the meeting with you. "We have decided that the ministers from the Social Democratic Party will talk to the representatives of the National Liberal Party and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania, and whatever decision they make will be made," Marcel Ciolacu said earlier today at the party's headquarters.

The ruling coalition in Romania, made up of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the National Liberal Party (NLP) and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania (DUH) party, met in an emergency meeting today due to the results of the first round of the presidential election and the defeat of the common candidate Crin Antonescu, who came in third place.

The mayor of Bucharest and independent candidate Nicosor Dan and the candidate of the nationalist party “Alliance for the Unification of Romanians“ reached the second round of the vote on May 18. Gheorghe Simion.

"Instead of letting the future president replace me, I decided to resign myself", Ciolacu said after the meeting of the SDP leadership.

He confirmed that the SDP is leaving the government and will not publicly support any of the candidates for president of Romania in the second round of the presidential election.

"Every supporter of the Social Democratic Party will vote as he wishes, according to his own conscience, what seems right to me", Ciolacu stressed.

"The future president, who will be elected on May 18, will decide together with the parties that can form a majority in parliament, who will govern and who will be prime minister," he added.

The National Liberal Party and the Democratic Union of Hungarians in Romania announced that they are supporting the candidate for the second round Nikusor Dan.
