Russian President Vladimir Putin has dismissed the commander of Russia's ground forces and appointed him deputy secretary of the country's Security Council, Reuters and TASS reported, quoted by BTA, citing a decree published on the Kremlin website.
“To appoint Oleg Leonidovich Salyukov as deputy secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation after he is dismissed from his post“, the document reads.
The Security Council is the Kremlin's highest-ranking advisory body, Reuters points out. It is chaired by Putin and is responsible for managing and integrating national security policy. The council has no direct authority over Russian security agencies or ministries.
The current secretary of the Security Council is former Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
For the past 11 years, Salyukov has led the Victory Day parades on Moscow's Red Square, which mark the anniversary of the defeat of Nazi Germany in World War II.
Since January 2023, Salyukov has been deputy chief of the Russian General Staff, Valery Gerasimov, who was appointed by Putin to command Russia's war in Ukraine, Reuters reported.
The United Kingdom, the EU, Canada and several other countries have imposed sanctions on Salyukov.
