Unknown assailants shot dead two close associates of Clara Brugada, mayor of the Mexican capital, yesterday, DPA reported, quoted by BTA.
The perpetrators opened fire on a car carrying Brugada's personal secretary and her advisor. This happened on a main road in the center of Mexico City, the city hall said in a statement. The assailants fled on a motorcycle.
"This crime will not go unpunished. "Those responsible will be arrested and brought to justice," the city administration said.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum offered her condolences to the families of the victims and assured that the federal government would cooperate in the investigation.
"We will get to the bottom of what happened, justice will be served," she said. Before being elected president, Sheinbaum herself was mayor of the capital.
In 2020, suspected members of the "Jalisco Nueva Generación" drug cartel (Jalisco New Generation) attacked then-Chief of the Metropolitan Police, Omar García Harfuch, in an upscale residential area of Mexico City. Harfuch was hit by several bullets in the shooting and underwent emergency surgery. Two of his bodyguards and a bystander were killed in the attack. García Harfuch is currently Mexico's Minister of Security.
