The Russian state nuclear corporation "Rosatom" is ready to resolve any technical issues in resolving the Iranian nuclear issue, the agency's director general Alexei Likhachev said today, quoted by TASS, BTA reports.
"We confirm our readiness to resolve any technical issues in case political decisions are made and an agreement is reached in a multilateral format on the so-called Iranian issue. Our cooperation with Iran in the nuclear sphere is developing," Likhachev pointed out.
He noted that this development of cooperation is in particular in the construction of nuclear power units and in the refueling of the operating First Unit of the Bushehr NPP. Rosatom is also working with Iran in the field of research on the use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
At the same time, the Institute for the Study of War said in its analysis that Russia's role as a mediator in the nuclear talks between Iran and the United States is unlikely to benefit American interests, given Moscow's close relations with Tehran.
US President Donald Trump said on June 4 that his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin had offered to "participate" in US-Iranian talks, the Washington-based think tank said. Russia's offer to take on the role of mediator came after Iran's supreme leader - Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, categorically rejected the recent US proposal because it requires Tehran to suspend all uranium enrichment procedures on its territory, the Institute for the Study of War notes.
Russia also opposed the American proposal, but also the US-specified goals of the nuclear negotiations in general. Moscow defended the Islamic Republic's right to enrich uranium, the Institute for the Study of War emphasizes.
