US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said that he was not aware of any current sanctions on Russia being lifted by the current administration in Washington.
He said this at a hearing before the House of Representatives Committee on Revenue and Expenditures.
Bessent could not name a single Russian entity against which the US had imposed sanctions during the Trump era.
He assured that Washington was taking measures against ships allegedly transporting Russian and Iranian oil. “The Russians and Iranians are very good at circumventing sanctions with what they call shadow fleets“, he said. "We are putting pressure on them," Bessent stressed, referring to the measures against the vessels in question.
Bessent recommended that US lawmakers consider the "unintended consequences" of the possible adoption of a bill for new sanctions against Russia. The bill in question was introduced in the Senate in early April.
The document also provides for secondary sanctions against Russia's trading partners. The senators' proposal included import duties of 500% on imports into the United States from countries that buy oil, gas, uranium and other goods from Russia.
