Orban: Ukraine's inclusion in NATO would lead to direct conflict with Russia - 1

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban expressed serious criticism of the European Union and Ukraine's position in a video address, quoted by Strana.ua and the Hungarian MTI agency, Focus and BTA report.

Orban said that Ukraine would not be able to join the EU, as this would put an end to the community in its current form. "Ukraine no longer has its own resources, so European countries will have to finance Ukrainian pensions, public sector employees' salaries and the armed forces," the Hungarian prime minister stressed.

He sharply criticized the European Commission, which in its recommendations calls on Hungary to remove restrictions on utility prices and gradually stop importing Russian natural gas and crude oil. In addition, Brussels does not support the Hungarian government's efforts to protect families from speculators through price restrictions, interest rates and mark-ups.

"Brussels believes that money is better in banks and multinationals," Orbán pointed out, adding that the European Commission does not like the special taxes on excess profit and targeted taxes introduced in Hungary. He also noted that the EC would eliminate subsidies for buying houses, calling them generous and untargeted, which he said distorts the market.

The prime minister also criticized reforms related to vocational training and unemployment subsidies, although the reforms have led to an increase in employment by one million people in Hungary.

In addition, Orbán pointed out that Ukraine's accession to NATO is impossible, as it would provoke a direct conflict between the Alliance and Russia. He accused Kiev of not recognizing the right of the Hungarian people to make decisions on the issue of Ukraine's accession to the EU, adding that Ukraine "threatens, blackmails and attacks them."

“We allowed Ukrainians to use all public services in Hungary, we provided them with assistance, treated their soldiers and educated their children,“ Orbán said, while at the same time accusing Ukraine of espionage on Hungarian territory.
