“The spiral of chaos must end“, said French President Emmanuel Macron today after the Iranian attack on the US base “Al Udeid“ in Qatar. He called on “all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalation and return to the negotiating table“, AFP reported, BTA reports.
In a statement published on the social network X, Macron expressed France's solidarity with Qatar, whose territory was hit by Iran. He added that he was "in close contact with the country's authorities."
French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot also warned of a growing danger of a "spiral of violence that exposes the region to the risk of widespread escalation with very serious consequences - even for Europeans," in an interview with France 2 television.
Earlier today, Tehran announced that it had fired missiles at the Al Udeid base - the largest US military facility in the Middle East - in response to US air strikes on three Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday.
According to the Pentagon, the attack caused no casualties. Qatar's foreign ministry said the missiles were intercepted and the base evacuated before the attack.
A statement from Doha also said the country "reserves the right to respond directly and proportionately to the nature and scale of this flagrant aggression, in accordance with international law."
