Washington hopes that the situation surrounding Iran will contribute to the settlement of the conflict in Ukraine, said the special envoy of the US President Stephen Witkoff.
„I think that the optimism that has emerged as a result of what is happening can also spread to Russia and Ukraine. We hope that people will look at what happened in Iran and say: „We also want to be part of the peace process“. "We hope this will lead to very, very, very good developments between Russia and Ukraine," he said in an interview with CNBC.
Washington is ready to discuss a peaceful nuclear program with Iran, but is categorically against uranium enrichment in the Islamic Republic, Witkoff continued.
“The discussion with Iran now will be about how we can redesign their civilian nuclear program so that it is better and does not include uranium enrichment,“ he said.
Witkoff added that “The UAE and many other countries have similar models of programs“. According to the US leader's special envoy, Tehran "does not need to enrich uranium to engage in nuclear energy."
The US hopes that a potential deal with Iran will include "strict controls" on its nuclear program, Witkoff noted. "Iran agrees with that, we've talked about that. If they have nothing to hide, they won't have a problem with strict controls. The IAEA, under the leadership of Rafael Grossi, is working on that now. We can provide support in implementing controls,“ he concluded.
US President Donald Trump's statement that China can buy both Iranian and American oil was a signal to Beijing that Washington is interested in working together and does not want to harm the Chinese economy, Witkoff said.
“I think it was a signal to the Chinese that we want to work with them and we are not interested in harming their economy, we are interested in working in unison,“ he added.
