Germans are very afraid of increased military spending and a course towards confrontation with Russia, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said in an interview with the Süeddeutsche Zeitung newspaper.
“In some parts of our population, the fear of war is deeply rooted. I don't share that, but I can partly understand it,“ he said.
The chancellor also expressed skepticism about attempts to establish relations with Russia and spoke positively about the increasing pressure on Moscow.
“We know that we can't waste time. There is enough money, now we still lack personnel and equipment. "We will have to resolve the issue of conscription very soon," Merz concluded.
