Washington and New Delhi could sign a comprehensive trade agreement in the fall of 2025, the American newspaper Politico reported, citing sources.

As specified in the publication, the parties have already reached some agreements on agricultural products and energy resources, as well as the elimination of some tariffs. It is expected that “a more comprehensive agreement will follow later in the fall”, the sources explained to the publication. According to them, the negotiations are complicated by the fact that “the Trump administration wants India to reduce trade barriers, and in return offers only to remove some of the tariffs recently imposed by [Washington]“.

As the publication emphasizes, Trump is also complicating these trade negotiations by regularly mentioning that he managed to prevent a war between India and Pakistan. He claims this despite repeated statements from New Delhi that the mediation of the American leader was not necessary. Indian officials have repeatedly stated that New Delhi does not need third-party mediation to resolve the Kashmir issue with Pakistan.

On June 27, the American leader said that the United States hopes to reach a trade agreement with India soon. “We have great deals coming. We may have a deal with India. A very big one.“ "We will open India for American business," he said, without giving details. In March, the head of the administration in Washington assured that the Indian authorities intend to significantly reduce tariffs on American products.

„The Times of India“ reported earlier, citing its sources, that India is resisting Washington's insistence on allowing imports of American agricultural products, including corn and soybeans, at low tariffs. As noted in the publication, New Delhi expects to sign a comprehensive trade agreement with the United States no later than July 9, when the deadline for Trump to delay raising American tariffs to 26% expires.
