Five sources said that Defense Secretary Pete Hegsett did not inform the White House before authorizing the halting of arms deliveries to Ukraine last week, CNN reports.
"Focus" recalls that in a phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Donald Trump said he was not responsible for halting arms deliveries to Kiev.
When asked yesterday during a cabinet meeting whether he approved the halt in deliveries, Trump declined to answer, saying only that the United States would continue to send defensive weapons to Ukraine. When asked who authorized the pause, Trump replied, "I don't know."
The U.S. special envoy for Ukraine, retired Gen. Keith Kellogg, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who is also Trump's national security adviser, were also not informed in advance of the pause and learned about it from press reports, according to a senior administration official and two of the sources.
When asked whether Hegseth informed the White House before approving the pause, White House press secretary Caroline Leavitt said the Pentagon had conducted a review "to ensure that all support going to all foreign countries is consistent with America's interests," adding that Trump "has made a decision to continue providing defensive weapons to Ukraine." She added that "the president has full confidence in the secretary of defense."
