Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni warned that there would be no winners in a potential trade war between the European Union and the United States, Italian news agency ANSA reported, BTA reports.
Her statement came in response to US President Donald Trump's warning that Washington would impose 30 percent tariffs on European goods from August 1 if a trade agreement is not reached by then.
“The government is in constant contact with the European Commission and all those involved in the negotiations“, Meloni said.
“A trade war within the West would make us all weaker in the face of the global challenges we face together. Europe has the economic and financial strength to defend its interests and negotiate a fair and reasonable agreement. Italy, as always, will actively contribute to this process,” she added.
The Italian prime minister’s statement underscores the need for unity among Western allies in a context of economic and geopolitical instability.
