The European Union has not yet reached an agreement on the adoption of a new package of sanctions against Russia. This was announced by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Kaja Kalas at a press conference after the end of the meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels, BTA reports.
According to her, the main obstacle at the moment is the position of Slovakia, which has not yet agreed to the sanctions. “We are very close to convincing Slovakia. Now the ball is in Bratislava's court“, said Kalas, adding that the country's demands may soon be satisfied.
She stressed that sanctions are key to limiting Russia's ability to wage war. “Russia does not want peace. The only way to get Putin to end the war is to force him," the High Representative added.
Kallas welcomed US President Donald Trump's announcement to send more weapons to Ukraine, but noted that the EU expects the US to take a greater share of responsibility. "We welcome President Trump's messages, but we would like the US to share the burden," she added, referring to the proposal that US arms supplies to Ukraine be financed by NATO.
