EP prepares resolution against violence against protesters in Serbia - 1

The European Parliament has launched a procedure for adopting a resolution entitled “Waves of violence and continued use of force against protesters in Serbia“, the Serbian edition of N1 TV reported. The initiative comes from several political groups in the EP, News.bg reports.

The draft resolution will be considered during the first autumn session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg, scheduled for September 8. The text is classified as a “resolution on current issues“. Category relating to urgent political, democratic or security issues requiring a response from the EP.

In this case, we are talking about the months-long anti-government protests in Serbia and, in particular, the numerous reports of excessive use of force against protesters, including students and minors.

The European Parliament is expected to adopt a resolution assessing the situation, possible recommendations to the European institutions and member states, and calls for action.

Protests in Serbia have been ongoing for eight months now. Citizens are demanding criminal and political accountability for the tragedy of last November, when a concrete canopy collapsed at the Novi Sad railway station, killing 16 people.
