US President Donald Trump said during his phone call with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on July 4 that Ukraine should go on the offensive on the front line, The Washington Post reported, citing an unnamed Ukrainian official.
A Ukrainian official, who requested anonymity, said that Trump's argument was that Ukraine "will not change the course of the war by playing defense".
According to WP, the US president also asked whether Ukraine could "bomb Moscow or St. Petersburg". As the publication notes, Zelensky replied: "If we have the right weapons, we can."
Earlier, the Axios publication wrote that Trump plans to transfer offensive weapons to Ukraine, including long-range missiles capable of hitting targets even in Moscow.
Western media suggest that these could be missiles with a range of at least 500 km, in particular ballistic missiles for MLRS HIMARS PrSM (Precision Strike Missile) or AGM-158 JASSM-ER cruise missiles with a range of up to 925 km, compatible with F-16 fighters.
On July 15, the Financial Times, citing sources, reported that Trump personally called on Ukraine to step up its strikes on territory deep inside Russia.
However, Trump previously told the White House media that the United States does not plan to transfer long-range missiles to Ukraine. He also answered negatively to journalists' questions "Should Zelensky attack Moscow?“.
We recall that on July 14, Donald Trump announced that the United States and NATO had signed an agreement to supply weapons to Ukraine. According to him, the United States will produce "the best in the world" weapons and sell them to NATO, and the Alliance will coordinate supplies to Ukraine. Thanks to the agreement, Ukraine will receive weapons worth billions of dollars, the American president said at the time.
According to The New York Times, the weapons that NATO will purchase from the United States for Ukraine are almost completely ready for immediate delivery. This includes, in particular, Patriot air defense systems, as well as missiles and ammunition manufactured in America.
