For decades, international law has been a cornerstone of statehood, but today it is seriously questioned. When it is violated, the entire international community loses and the path to violence and instability is opened. This was stated by King Philippe of Belgium in his address to the nation on the occasion of the country's national holiday, BTA reports.
In his speech, the king emphasized that Europe must choose the path of cooperation, not confrontation. “Our continent must establish itself as an alternative to brute force and remain true to its founding values. Democracy, justice and the rule of law“, said the Belgian monarch.
King Philippe expressed his firm support for Ukraine, saying: “The Ukrainian people are fighting with remarkable courage. We must continue to support their struggle for sovereignty.“
He also emphasized the importance of respecting human rights as a basis for preserving dignity and building trust between peoples. As an example of the violation of these principles, the king pointed to the conflict in the Middle East.
“In addition to its political dimension, this conflict deeply affects human dignity. I join all those who condemn the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza. People are dying of hunger and bombardment there. This has gone on for too long and is a shame for humanity,“, said King Philippe.
