Thailand's acting Prime Minister Phumtham Vejjaichai will meet his Cambodian counterpart Hun Manet in Kuala Lumpur tomorrow in an attempt to resolve the crisis that has led to bloody clashes along the shared border. This was announced today by the Thai Prime Minister's Office, quoted by Agence France-Presse, BTA reports.
The talks in the Malaysian capital are aimed at “restoring peace”, said office spokesman Jirayu Hungsub. Malaysia, which this year holds the rotating chairmanship of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), is playing an important role as the host of the meeting.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has also joined the de-escalation efforts. He said he had spoken to the leaders of both countries and urged them to reduce tensions. "The United States stands ready to assist as a mediator to find a peaceful solution," the US State Department said in a statement, quoted by Reuters.
