US President Donald Trump signed an executive order yesterday to increase tariffs on Canadian goods from 25% to 35%, the White House said in a statement, quoted by Reuters, quoted by BTA.
"In response to Canada's continued inaction and retaliatory measures, President Trump has deemed it necessary to increase tariffs on Canada from 25% to 35% to effectively address the current emergency," the statement said.
The new tariffs take effect today, August 1.
The Pentagon announced that it is ending the deployment of all National Guard troops, with the exception of only 250 people who were sent to Los Angeles to maintain public order in connection with protests against the immigration policy of the Donald Trump administration, the Associated Press reported.
US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered all remaining 1,350 National Guard troops to leave the city this week. The other 250 people will remain to protect federal personnel, buildings and property, Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said in a statement.
About 4,000 US National Guard troops and 700 Marines were deployed to Los Angeles in early June despite objections from state and local authorities. Half of them were withdrawn about two weeks ago, and the Marines were ordered to leave a few days later.
