ISW: Moscow has yet to give a coordinated response to US submarines - 1

The Kremlin has yet to give a coordinated response to US President Donald Trump's August 1 order to deploy two US nuclear submarines closer to Russia.

This is recalled by the Institute for the Study of War (ISW).

The Kremlin, the Russian Defense Ministry and the Russian Foreign Ministry did not respond directly to Trump's August 1 announcement, and ISW continued to observe only limited, uncoordinated reactions from Russian state media and selected Russian officials and military bloggers on August 2.

Deputy Chairman of the Russian State Duma Defense Committee Dmitry Zhuravlev tried to discredit the credibility of the announcement of Trump.

The Kremlin-affiliated TASS news agency published footage on August 2 showing the "Knyaz Pozharsky"-class nuclear submarine of the "Borey-A" type arriving at the Northern Fleet's main submarine base in Severomorsk, Murmansk Region.

The "Knyaz Pozharsky" submarine entered service on July 24, 2025.

A Russian military blogger used the submarine's arrival in Severomorsk to claim that "Knyaz Pozharsky" is far superior to its American counterparts and that the Russian Navy will put it into combat service in response to Trump's deployment of nuclear submarines.

TASS reported a claim by a senior research fellow at the Institute of Latin America at the Russian Academy of Sciences that Russia could deploy Oreshnik ballistic missile systems in other countries, including Latin America and the Caribbean, to ensure Russia’s global military presence and the sovereignty of its allies. The August 2 scholar’s claim is in line with a Russian military blogger’s August 1 call for Russian nuclear-armed ships and submarines to visit Cuba. Both responses attempt to invoke the historical memory of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov repeated many of the same arguments that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko made during a press conference on August 1, blaming Ukraine for the lack of progress in the talks and signaling Russia’s unwavering commitment to its long-standing demands. Indian refineries continue to import Russian crude despite US President Donald Trump’s imposition of 25 percent tariffs on duties on India's exports to the United States. "Reuters" reported on August 2 that Indian government sources said India would continue to buy Russian oil.

Reuters reported that Indian government sources said there were long-term oil contracts that did not allow for an immediate halt to Russian oil imports, and that India's continued imports of Russian oil had helped prevent a global spike in oil prices.

Indian news agency ANI reported on August 2 that Indian refineries were continuing to source oil from Russian suppliers due to "price, quality of crude, inventory, logistics and other economic factors".
