Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that his country should be vigilant and rely on its own economic potential in view of today's challenges.
"There is an atmosphere of global instability everywhere. All countries are focused on their own interests.
India will become the third largest economy in the world and therefore it should be vigilant when it comes to its economic interests," Hindustan Times quoted Modi as saying at a rally in Varanasi.
The Prime Minister called on the business community and citizens to support domestic production. "We will only buy things made by Indians. We must support local manufacturing," Modi stressed.
He added that the trade sector should prioritize manufacturing in India, especially in view of the challenging international environment.
The publication notes that Modi did not mention US President Donald Trump, who had earlier given a negative assessment of the state of the Indian economy.
Modi also warned Pakistan that India would give a strong response to its aggressive actions. "The "BrahMos" missiles are currently being assembled in Lucknow. (...) If Pakistan misbehaves again, the missiles manufactured in Uttar Pradesh will destroy the terrorists," he said.
We recall that 25% tariffs on India, imposed by US President Donald Trump on Indian imports to the US, came into effect on August 1. On this occasion, the opposition in India accused Prime Minister Narendra Modi of a political failure.
On July 14, Trump threatened 100 percent tariffs on both Russia and countries that buy Russian oil. Yesterday, August 1, "Reuters" reported, citing its sources, that four of India's leading state-owned oil refineries have suspended purchases of Russian oil after Trump's threat.
