The Turkish Grain Authority (TMA) announced the official purchase prices for hazelnuts for the 2025-2026 season, setting a price of 200 Turkish liras (4.24 euros) per kilogram of high-quality hazelnuts and 195 liras (4.13 euros) per kilogram of lower-quality hazelnuts, which is an increase of 51.5 and 50 percent respectively compared to last year's prices, the website “Türkiye Today“ reported, quoted by BTA.
The decision of the Authority is related to the serious decline in hazelnut yields, which was caused mainly by frosts on plantations in April. At the same time, experts warn that this year's hazelnut harvest in the Black Sea region could fall below 400,000 tons, significantly lower than the usual level of about 800,000 tons.
Turkey is responsible for about 70 percent of global hazelnut supplies, and the price increase is expected to negatively affect chocolate producers, such as the Italian company “Ferrero“, which uses hazelnuts as a main ingredient in its chocolate products and buys about a quarter of Turkish hazelnuts.
