Heavy rains hit the South Korean capital area for a second day today, killing at least one person, flooding or damaging hundreds of roads and homes and forcing more than 1,000 people to evacuate, the Associated Press reported, quoted by BTA.
Some 250-300 millimeters of rain fell in parts of Seoul and the nearby cities of Paju, Incheon and Gimpo this morning, as a result of which cars were stranded on roads that turned into chocolate-colored rivers and residents salvaged belongings from properties damaged by flash floods.
Authorities issued warnings of floods and landslides in areas located near rivers, streams and hills, and emergency workers rescued at least 145 people and responded to hundreds of reports of damaged roads. Power was restored to about 4,000 households that were without power overnight as of this morning, the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Security announced.
The South Korean Meteorological Agency said the Seoul area would continue to be hit by heavy rain until this morning. Authorities closed dozens of riverside parks and more than 100 hiking trails, while also issuing text messages warning people to beware of flooding, landslides and damaged buildings. The rain did not disrupt any flights.
