Hungary is a sovereign state, not part of an empire, and preserving Hungarian national identity is one of the most important tasks, including for future generations, said Gergely Guias, the chief of staff of the country's Prime Minister Viktor Orban, quoted by the Hungarian news agency MTI and BTA.
Guias said at an event marking Hungary's national holiday on August 20, the baptism of Hungary, that the day is a good opportunity to take into account prospects, achievements and tasks, also considering that "we can talk about a millennial perspective".
"A millennial state, which is a union between Hungarians of the past, present and future, holds us and us connects us for 1,025 years," he added.
"The millennial survival itself demonstrates the success of the state of St. Stephen," he said.
St. Stephen founded a state, "where everyone could find their home if they chose us as their home," a state that drew its strength from the Christian faith and was therefore part of European culture, he added. Guiss said that Hungary was a country that had always tried to protect its citizens and had only failed to do so in the most difficult periods of history.
