Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced the arrest of a suspect in the murder of former parliament speaker Andriy Parubiy, Ukfinform reported, quoted by BTA.

“Necessary investigations are underway“, he said on social media, thanking investigators for “quick and coordinated work.”

54-year-old Andriy Parubiy was a figure in the pro-European Maidan revolution and was chairman of the Verkhovna Rada from 2016 to 2019, AFP notes.

He was shot dead on Saturday in Lviv, in the western part of the country, a murder for which the head of Ukraine’s military intelligence Kirill Budanov blamed Russia, with which the country has been at war since February 2022.

Parubiy is best known for his role in major pro-European movements in Ukraine, first in the “Orange Revolution“ of 2004, and then in the Maidan in 2014.

He was the “commander“ of the self-defense groups during the Maidan protests, which were suppressed with blood. This movement forced pro-Russian President Viktor Yanukovych to leave power and flee to Russia in 2014.
