Valentina Zadgorska: Since September 22, Bulgaria has been an equal partner to other European countries

The event is important, although it sits a little in the shadow of other national holidays

In 1908, Prince Ferdinand declared the independence of Bulgaria in Tarnovo. Thus, our country broke its vassal ties with the Ottoman Empire and deservedly reappeared on the world map as an independent and self-sufficient country. Today, the holiday takes us back to this historical moment, which Valentina Zadgorska, a historian at the Department of New History at the National Museum of History in Sofia, spoke about on the air of “Your Day”.

The event is so important, although it sits a little in the shadow of other national holidays, because since September 22, Bulgaria has been an equal partner to other European countries. It rejects the restrictive clauses of the Berlin Congress, which hinder its normal and successful economic development. But this is as a result of its successful development so far,” the historian commented.

According to her, Bulgaria is achieving comprehensive successes in the socio-political, cultural and economic sectors. “This necessitates the declaration of independence, because Bulgaria must pay an annual tax to the Ottoman Empire, said Zadgorska.

“The reparations regime is also burdensome. It means an unequal international system in which foreign countries that have concluded international treaties with the Ottoman Empire enjoy privileges. They are also mandatory for the Principality. Thus, they hinder its economic development,” the historian said.

Zadgorska shared that independence was declared during the independent rule of the Democratic Party with Prime Minister Alexander Malinov.
