Ready-made anti-vaxxers are coming out of our institutes. The health inspector demanded changes in medical education.
This was announced by the Chief State Health Inspector Assoc. Prof. Angel Kunchev in an interview with the newspaper "Telegraph", in response to a question about whether there is a connection between the attitude towards vaccines in our country and the training programs for doctors.
"The connection is direct and direct. There is no need to lie to ourselves, there are not many, but ready-made anti-vaxxers are coming out of our medical institutes. I am talking not only about doctors, but also about dental specialists, pharmacists, nurses, midwives, physician assistants,," Assoc. Prof. Kunchev is categorical.
According to him, it is unacceptable for specialists to come out after 5-6 years of training with "distorted consciousness" and instead of helping people, they hinder them.
On this occasion, the Chief State Health Inspector explained that a special group of experts has developed a proposal for minor adjustments to the curricula at universities that train doctors and medical specialists.
"Unfortunately, some of our medical universities work according to quite old programs. They read things that were read 15 years ago, and medicine is developing very quickly and it is important to keep up with the latest developments," he commented.
Assoc. Prof. Kunchev gave an example that in the past the main causative agents were bacteria, while now they are viruses.
"Currently, either no lectures are given about viruses, or they are superficial. Excuse me, but now, with such a variety of viruses, it is not possible to read just their names in one lecture, let alone for the student to learn what they are about," added Assoc. Prof. Kunchev.
The expert group will suggest to the rectors to make adjustments to the programs, as this is in the interest of everyone.
"I know how difficult it is, because each specialty thinks it is the most important, keeps the positions it has won, but life requires that there be improvement in training in terms of virology, vaccinology, and hospital infections," the health inspector is categorical.
He added that the developed program envisages affecting both students, the elderly population, and experts in terms of better health education of the nation. However, the effect of these activities would be seen late – after 5, 10 or 15 years.
