They are checking for a possible "glitch" in the software of the electricity distribution companies' systems

Some of the electricity meters for which signals have been filed have been dismantled and submitted for examination to an independent laboratory in order to establish the correctness of the reporting

"Any consumer who has been harmed by inflated electricity bills will be compensated through direct reimbursement or by deducting the overpayment from the next monthly invoice". This was stated by the acting Minister of Energy Traycho Traykov to the Bulgarian National Radio.

"Every person who is harmed must be compensated according to the provided legal mechanisms - either with money or with a deduction from the next bill," Traykov said.

Yesterday, the minister stated that subscribers with justified complaints about high electricity bills will be compensated.

According to him, the Energy and Water Regulatory Commission (EWRC) has established a significant difference between the December and November bills. Part of the explanation is objective - in November 2025, consumption was lower compared to the same month of the previous year, while in December 2025 a significant increase was recorded compared to December 2024.

Traykov pointed out that at the moment the number of justified complaints is small. Some of the electricity meters that were reported have been dismantled and submitted for examination to an independent laboratory in order to establish the correctness of the readings.

The regulator is also investigating a hypothesis of a possible “glitch“ - a technical error in the software of the billing systems of the electricity distribution companies. The minister expressed his expectation that the final results of the inspections and full information on the case will be available by the end of February or the beginning of March.
