Since the beginning of the year, the dead there are 40 fewer people on the road compared to the same period last year.

This is what Bogdan Milchev, director of the Institute for Road Safety and former head of the Traffic Police, told the BNR.

"We have a 27% drop in victims,", he clarified and blamed the media for not disclosing this information.

The decline is greater than in 2020, when there was a pandemic and traffic was 70 percent weaker. There are reasons why the victims decreased so sharply in such a short period, Milchev pointed out.

The serious problem is our extremely unstable transport system, which makes sharp drops and we constantly return to the starting position, commented Bogdan Milchev in the program "Before all". According to him, the data on the fewer deaths speak precisely of instability, "because maybe by the end of the year we will return to the starting position again".

Transport system managers are absent from this conversation, he pointed out.

"People always make mistakes. The idea is to manage the risk of these mistakes so that we don't perish. The question is how to prioritize risk – to establish the root causes."

Buying mobile cameras is a wrong approach. We need stationary cameras in dangerous places to make drivers slow down so they don't go off the curve, believes the former head of the traffic police.

In his words, the purpose of these cameras is not to bring money, but to calm the traffic.

"The Ministry of Internal Affairs acts like a commercial company that buys more cameras to bring more money into the treasury."

The problem with high school graduates is overexposed, Milchev also said.
