A week ago, the cutting of trees started due to the repair of "Oplchenska" street. in Sofia. Residents of the neighborhood went out in protest. Accusations and political attacks directed at Sofia Mayor Vasil Terziev created additional tension around the street widening project.
"The decision to cut down these trees was made by the GERB-led Ecology Commission at GERB time on March 8, 2022. This whole project, with all its phases, started as early as 2009, when part of the activities on the detailed development plan began. In its entire length, "Oplchenska" street has been expanded into a three-way strip format. This was the last section, it is necessary for the city.
This was stated by the chairman of the PP-DB-SS group in SOS Boris Bonev in "Day ON AIR".
He added to Bulgaria ON AIR that the 39 trees, of which 14 are invasive species, will be replaced with 50 new trees on the street and another 50 in the area.
"Neither am I a specialist in planting trees, certainly neither are specialists from GERB, given their practice and success rate with planted and successfully surviving trees over the years of their management. There is almost no boulevard in Sofia, repaired or built in their time, on which the trees have survived. If there is one word that I can use to describe GERB's behavior throughout this case, it is hypocritical," Bonev also said.
According to him, GERB are trying to sabotage any attempt at change in the capital, including the completion of the Ring Road.
The prepared documents and plans for the construction of the Ring Road have taken more than 10 years of work, including the preparation of various project options and parcel plans. If the project is stopped or delayed, it would mean a new delay of a decade, which will have serious consequences for the development of Sofia, it became clear from Bonev's words.
