A second autopsy will be performed on the body of the deceased 36-year-old Yavor Georgiev. This was announced at a briefing in Varna by Interior Minister Daniel Mitov, quoted by bTV.
Mitov is in the city for an urgent meeting of the Regional Directorate of the Ministry of the Interior in connection with the man's death and the suspicions of police violence.
The Minister of the Interior confirmed that he is removing the director of the Varna Regional Directorate of Internal Affairs, Senior Commissioner Andrey Angelov, because of the case. Among the reasons is the fact that the police officers involved in the clash with Yavor did not have body cameras turned on.
Mitov specified that the removal of Andrey Angelov was not due to his professional qualities, but because managerial action was necessary to begin restoring trust in the police in Varna. The minister did not deny that Angelov had been reassigned to the Economic Police and reminded that dismissals in the Ministry of Internal Affairs go through a corresponding procedure.
On June 7, it was reported that 36-year-old Yavor Georgiev died in a psychiatric clinic in the city after a clash with police officers.
After the incident, his relatives held a protest and demanded an investigation into police violence.
According to the forensic medical expert report prepared by three doctors, 36-year-old Yavor Georgiev did not die from suffocation caused by compression of the neck, chest or abdomen, the Appellate Prosecutor's Office in Varna announced.
According to the expert report, the immediate cause of the man's death was acute cardiovascular and respiratory failure caused by brain edema.
Suspicions of police violence also arose after security camera clips were distributed on social networks, which appear to show police officers pressing and hitting Georgiev.
Meanwhile, a second clip from the security camera has emerged, filming the man's arrest. The footage is from the minutes before he was put in the ambulance that took him to the psychiatric hospital.
They show that at this particular moment Yavor Georgiev is on the ground and not showing aggression, but the police officers continue to use violence.
