Russian President Vladimir Putin's special envoy Kirill Dmitriev has quarreled with Financial Times journalist Christopher Miller about Donbas. Miller posted on social networks information from an FT article that the US is offering Ukraine security guarantees in exchange for its withdrawal from Donbas.
"Zelensky said that security guarantees between the US and Ukraine are ready to be signed. Why this delay? The Trump administration has made it clear to Ukraine that US security guarantees are contingent on Kiev agreeing to withdraw its troops from Donbas, the journalist wrote.
Dmitriev responded to the publication, stating that the withdrawal of troops from Donbas is “the path to peace for Ukraine“.
In response, Miller specified that such a development is possible only if Russian troops withdraw.
“Russia's withdrawal from Donbas - and its complete withdrawal from Ukraine - is the path to peace. As long as Russian troops remain on Ukrainian soil, there will be no peace. Occupation is not peace,“ the journalist wrote.
However, Dmitriev did not stop there and moved on to personal attacks. He accused Miller of “incitement to war“ and the spread of "British false narratives", which, according to him, hinder the peaceful settlement of the dispute.
White House Deputy Press Secretary Anna Kelly denied the Financial Times' information that the US would provide Ukraine with security guarantees only if Kiev gives up Donbas.
"This is absolutely false – "the only role of the US in the peace process is to bring the two sides together to reach an agreement," she said.
An unnamed source familiar with the US position noted that Washington "is not trying to force Ukraine to make territorial concessions."
On January 25, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the document on US security guarantees was 100% ready and Ukraine expected its partners to be ready regarding the date and place of its signing.
