The US government is "deeply troubled" from the Israeli attack on a school in Gaza City today, in which, according to the Palestinian authorities, about 100 people died, said a spokesman for the US National Security Council, quoted by DPA and BTA.

"We are in contact with our Israeli counterparts who have stated that the strike was against senior officials of "Hamas" and we want further details,'' the spokesman said.

Earlier, Israel said that the building it hit in Gaza City "served as a hideout for terrorists and commanders of Hamas".

The US spokesman said it was known that the Palestinian militant group "Hamas" "uses schools as gathering places and from which to operate", but added that the US has "repeatedly and consistently said that Israel must take measures to minimize harm to the civilian population.

"We grieve for every Palestinian civilian who has died in this conflict, including children, and far too many civilians continue to be killed and wounded. This underscores the urgent need for a ceasefire and a hostage settlement, for which we continue to work tirelessly," the spokesman added.
