Failure to implement environmental policies leads to costs of approximately 180 billion. This is stated in a report by the European Commission, reported SIR (Servizio Informazione Religiosa).

Failure to comply with EU environmental legislation, which leads to air and water pollution, nature degradation and waste, among other things, generates costs estimated at 180 billion euros per year.

These costs amount to around 1 percent of the EU's gross domestic product (GDP). Enforcement of EU rules will ensure prosperity, competitiveness and environmental security in the European Union, the report says.

The report highlights “the urgent need to improve enforcement of environmental legislation“. The report found shortcomings in the areas of circular economy, water, biodiversity, air pollution and climate across the EU.

Many EU countries need to step up their efforts to meet recycling targets, improve water management, tackle ongoing biodiversity loss and harmful levels of air pollution, and tackle the effects of climate change, the EC said.
