The militaristic and confrontational atmosphere that is intensifying around Russia's western borders is causing serious concern. This was stated by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov during a regular briefing, commenting on a recent statement by former President Dmitry Medvedev on the possibility of preemptive strikes against the West, TASS reports, BTA reports.
In his statement, Medvedev emphasized that Russia should not only react to the actions of the West, but also, if necessary, prevent them through preventive actions.
“Given the current situation in the European direction, dominated by unconstructive, confrontational and militarized sentiments, such concerns seem fully justified“, Peskov noted, without going into specifics about potential threats.
He added that Dmitry Medvedev has many years of political experience, including as President of the Russian Federation, and currently holds a high state position. According to him, the statement made should be considered as Medvedev's personal position.
