Greece is preparing for an intense and prolonged heat wave that begins today and is expected to last at least until Friday, reports the Kathimerini newspaper, BTA reports.

According to data from the National Observatory in Athens, hot air masses coming from North Africa will cover the Balkans and raise temperatures significantly. In some areas of the country, thermometers are expected to reach 44 degrees Celsius.

Meteorologist Thodoris Kolidas indicated that the heat wave will intensify after Monday, with the highest temperatures expected on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Authorities are warning citizens and tourists to limit outdoor activities during the hottest hours of the day, to drink enough fluids and to monitor for symptoms of heatstroke or other heat-related health problems.
