The pragmatic move: Volvo abandons pure electrics - 1

The Swedish manufacturer Volvo is about to undertake a significant strategic change that reflects the dynamics of the markets. Patent images of a new version of the premium minivan Volvo EM90, which is equipped with a plug-in hybrid (PHEV), have appeared on the Internet.

This is a serious departure from the original idea, as the EM90 was previously presented as a fully electric model, created exclusively for the needs of Chinese consumers. The change in concept clearly shows that even in the electrified Chinese market, there is a certain cooling of interest in purely electric cars. Volvo responded pragmatically, offering a more flexible version with a gasoline engine.

According to the published patent sketches, the only visible external difference between the hybrid and electric versions is the presence of an additional opening for the fuel tank, located on the right side of the body. While the electric EM90 has a charging port only on the left, the new PHEV model adds a second fuel filler neck – an unambiguous sign of the presence of an internal combustion engine.

The rest of the exterior design remains unchanged. The minivan retains the elegant, minimalist profile characteristic of modern Volvo models, including the laconic front end and the iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights.

We recall that the current electric EM90 is a luxury six-seater minivan based on the Geely electric platform. Its impressive dimensions (length 5206 mm, wheelbase 3205 mm) position it directly in the premium MPV segment. The electric version is powered by a single electric motor with a power of 200 kW (about 272 hp), offering a range of up to 738 km on the Chinese CLTC cycle.

The price of the all-electric EM90 starts at 100,000 euros, which places it among the most expensive models in its class. The hybrid version is expected to be more affordable, but its main advantage is versatility. It will allow owners to travel significantly longer distances without worrying about frequent recharging - a critical factor for Chinese consumers who often take long trips.

Regardless of the powertrain, the EM90 remains true to its concept of luxury and comfort. The interior is made of natural materials and is equipped with the latest technologies, including a large central screen with Google Automotive operating system and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system.

The launch of a hybrid version is a logical and strategic response to market signals. Even with high sales of electric vehicles in China, the growth rate is gradually slowing. With the EM90 PHEV modification, Volvo aims to strengthen its position in the premium MPV segment, expanding the circle of potential buyers who are still looking for a compromise between an electric future and traditional practicality.
