Toyota Land Cruiser changes its philosophy - the legend loses its frame? - 1

The world of off-road enthusiasts is on the verge of shock. Toyota is working on a radical expansion of the Land Cruiser model family, which could lead to the biggest change in the philosophy of the iconic model since 1951. According to inside sources, the Japanese giant plans to launch not one, but two new models - an SUV and a pickup truck, which may abandon the traditional frame construction (body-on-frame) in favor of a frameless platform.

Comfort surpasses rigidity

The traditional frame architecture, which for decades guaranteed the legendary strength and durability of the Land Cruiser off-road, is about to be retired for the new versions. The use of a frameless platform aims to offer a significant improvement in everyday comfort and road handling, eliminating the "roughness" typical of classic off-road machines. This approach reflects the conceptual guidelines shown with the Toyota EPU (pickup) and Land Cruiser Se (SUV) prototypes at the 2023 Japan Mobility Expo.

The new pickup: Technological and flexible

The pickup is expected to inherit many of the features of the EPU concept. Its estimated length will be around 5 meters. Its most exciting feature is the possibility of a retractable cargo bed, which sets it apart from Toyota's current utility models, such as the Hilux, Tacoma or Tundra.

Electrification and e-TNGA

Both new models are designed to meet the challenges of the electric era, and are expected to be powered by hybrid or all-electric powertrains. To this end, Toyota is considering using the flexible e-TNGA platform or another frameless architecture that allows for easy integration of electric components. If these plans come to fruition, the electric Land Cruiser Se could debut as early as 2026, while the pickup is expected in 2027.

Global expansion and production change

These changes are not limited to the product range. Toyota is considering starting production of the new Land Cruisers directly in the United States. Such a strategic localization would have a dual benefit: reducing customs barriers and strengthening the brand's position in the all-important American market.

Conclusion: Flexibility vs. Heritage

This move marks the beginning of a new era for the Land Cruiser – a transition from the unwavering, rugged off-road vehicle to a more flexible, modern, and electrified family. Toyota is seeking to combine its legendary heritage with a new, environmentally friendly approach capable of competing effectively in the dynamic electrification market. Fans will have to swallow the bitter pill of losing the frame, but they will get a modern, flexible, and global Land Cruiser for the 21st century.
