The most original and most unconventional version of the Honda CR-V will soon disappear from the market - 1

One of the most exotic and technologically daring machines in modern automotive engineering – Honda CR-V e:FCEV – is preparing for its last “farewell“. The Japanese giant has officially confirmed that the unique crossover powered by hydrogen fuel cells will be withdrawn from the assembly line by the end of 2026. The decision comes after the news that the joint venture with General Motors for the production of these specific power units in Michigan is ceasing its activities.

Although it may seem like a defeat for the hydrogen idea, for Honda this is more of a strategic regrouping. The e:FCEV model was a real “white swallow“ – the first serial hydrogen car with the ability to be charged from the electrical network (Plug-in). Despite its avant-garde concept, the market reality turned out to be harsh. The limited infrastructure of charging stations, even in the technological oasis of California, reduced the circle of users to only 200 brave lessees. Well, if there had been a hydrogen column on every corner, the fate of this Honda would probably have been radically different!

Under the hood of this technological masterpiece pulses a 177 hp electric motor, supported by a compact 17.7-kilowatt-hour battery. It allows the crossover to travel about 60 km on electricity alone - ideal for city driving without a gram of harmful emissions. However, when the open road calls you, hydrogen cells come to the rescue, extending the total range to an impressive 621 km. And all this, while only pure water vapor comes out of the exhaust.

The interior of the e:FCEV is no less than the innovative drive. The model is available exclusively in the luxurious Touring trim level, where comfort is elevated to a cult status. Passengers are pampered with a first-class Bose audio system, dual-zone climate control and refined upholstery, while heated seats and a steering wheel make every journey comfortable, regardless of the vagaries of the weather.

Despite the model's discontinuation, engineers from Tokyo are not raising the white flag. Honda plans to harness the invaluable experience gained in developing the next generation of fuel cells, which will be cheaper, more durable and likely intended for a wider range of applications - from heavy trucks to stationary generators. The story of the CR-V e:FCEV may soon end, but Honda's hydrogen dream is yet to evolve.
