Yesterday we told you which are the most reliable cars with diesel engines and since the article aroused quite a lot of interest, today we decided to focus your attention on those diesel cars that, according to consumers, are the most unreliable.
The study we present to you was conducted by the publication What Car?, in collaboration with MotorEasy, and is based on a survey conducted among thousands of owners regarding the reliability of their cars. The latest study collected 29,967 responses and covered 199 models (up to five years old) from 31 different car brands. Here are the most unreliable diesels.
1. Kia Sportage (2016-2021)

Reliability rating 66.2%
Most common faults: engine 24%, gearbox/clutch 20%, non-engine electrical 16%, brakes 8%, engine electrical 8%, body 4%, exhaust 4%, fuel system 4%, satellite navigation/infotainment system 4%
2. Volkswagen Golf (2020-present)

Reliability rating 70.4%
Most common faults: electrical, other than engine 11%, satellite navigation/infotainment system 11%, air conditioning 8%, body 8%, brakes 5%, engine 5%
3. BMW 5 Series (2017-2023)

Reliability rating 79.8%
Most common faults: exhaust 15%, engine electrical 9%, non-engine electrical 6%, 12-volt battery 6%, air on 4%, bodywork 4%, satellite navigation/infotainment system 4%.
The top five in this anti-rating is completed by the Ford Kuga, produced in the period 2013 - 2020 (83.8%) and the Audi Q5 (2018-present), which has an unsatisfactory rating of 85.6%.
