The reconstruction of the Gaza Strip will require $70 billion, said Jaco Killiers, Special Representative of the Administrator for Assistance to the Palestinian People of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
“According to a rapid assessment of damage and needs conducted jointly by the United Nations, the European Union and the World Bank, the reconstruction of Gaza will require approximately $70 billion“, he told a briefing in Geneva. However, Killiers refused to estimate the timeframe for completing reconstruction work in the Palestinian enclave.
According to him, the task of the aforementioned organizations, in addition to determining the scale of the destruction, is to “prioritize which areas should be rebuilt first and where to focus efforts“.
“Probably not all areas will be rebuilt“, he added.
On October 6, delegations from Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement resumed indirect talks to resolve the situation in the Gaza Strip, with the mediation of Egypt, Qatar, the United States and Turkey. On October 9, the parties to the conflict signed an agreement to implement the first phase of the peace plan presented earlier by US President Donald Trump. The Gaza ceasefire agreement came into effect on October 10.
