The International Court of Justice has set deadlines for Iran and the US to submit written submissions on the dispute over Washington's freezing of Tehran's assets, the court's ruling states.

In its ruling of March 30, 2023, the court recognized the US's obligation to pay compensation to Iran for violating its international obligations in freezing the Islamic Republic's assets, but the parties were required to independently agree on the amount of payments within 2 years. Since no agreement was reached, the matter was returned to the court.

According to the decision, Iran must submit a memorandum of its position by November 25, 2026. The United States, for its part, is required to submit a counter-memorandum by August 25, 2027. The court noted that the deadlines were set taking into account the positions of both parties. The representative of Iran stated that the country needs approximately six months to prepare the document, while the United States indicated a nine-month deadline due to a change in the legal team in the case.

As the court noted, the case concerns Iranian assets frozen in the United States and decisions of American courts allowing part of these funds to be used to pay compensation to victims of terrorist attacks. Tehran has challenged Washington's actions at the International Court of Justice, claiming they violate the bilateral 1955 Treaty of Amity.

After receiving the parties' written submissions, the court will determine the further course of the proceedings, including the possible holding of hearings on the amount of compensation.
