Underground gas storage (UGS) stocks in Europe have fallen below 55%, according to data from Gas Infrastructure Europe (GIE). However, gas volumes in underground gas storage are still the fourth highest ever recorded for January. Since the start of the heating season, the EU has withdrawn around 48 billion cubic meters from underground gas storage.
Gas withdrawals from underground gas storage in EU countries on 29 January 2025, according to GIE, amounted to 464 million cubic meters. m. Injections decreased to 33 million cubic meters. m. Despite the high consumption of gas reserves (third highest for January), the situation for Europe is still far from catastrophic. The total volume of fuel in the underground gas storage is the fourth highest for January for the entire monitoring period - 60.7 billion cubic meters of gas.
The last season of gas withdrawal from European underground storages ended on March 31, 2024, when 58.44% of the reserves remained in them (a record for the entire monitoring period). Currently, European underground gas storage facilities are 54.65% full (6.91 pp less than the average for this date over the past five years), which is already lower than the figure not only at the end of the last autumn-winter period, but also at the end of the 2022-2023 heating season. In the near future, the level of stocks will fall below the minimum values of 2020.
The flow of liquefied natural gas from terminals to the European gas transportation system in January decreased compared to December. Currently, the capacity for regasification of liquefied gas and its subsequent injection into European pipelines is loaded at 44% of its maximum.
