Canadian authorities have excluded Elon Musk's Tesla brand electric vehicles from a federal program that provides rebates for the purchase of electric vehicles, CTV reported.
The decision was made by the head of the country's Ministry of Transport, Chrystia Freeland, in connection with tariffs on Canadian goods that were introduced by the administration of US President Donald Trump. Tesla will be excluded from the program "as long as the illegal US tariffs remain in force," the minister said.
In 2022, then-Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said that the federal government would encourage people to buy electric vehicles and invest in charging infrastructure. For these purposes, Ottawa was going to allocate 2.9 billion Canadian dollars (at that time 2.31 billion USD). Trudeau also said that from 2035 onwards, only electric cars or plug-in hybrids will be available for purchase in Canada.
