US President Donald Trump told General Secretary of the Central Committee (CC) of the Communist Party of Vietnam (CPV) To Lam during a phone call that the US will reduce tariffs on Vietnamese goods, the Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.
The parties discussed issues related to Vietnam-US relations and the progress of negotiations to reach an agreement on mutual trade tariffs. The two leaders welcomed the fact that the trade negotiation delegations agreed on a joint statement between Vietnam and the United States on the parameters of a mutually fair and balanced trade agreement.
Trump confirmed that the United States will significantly reduce import tariffs on many Vietnamese export goods and continue to cooperate with Vietnam to resolve issues affecting bilateral trade relations, especially in areas of priority for both sides. The General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee proposed that the US side recognize Vietnam as a market economy country as soon as possible and lift restrictions on the export of some high-tech products.
The two leaders discussed a series of guidelines and measures to develop the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and the United States in the coming years. They highly appreciated the expansion of delegation exchanges and contacts at all levels, as well as the promotion of cooperation in the fields of economy, trade and investment, especially in key and breakthrough areas such as science and high technology, the Vietnam News Agency reported.
The General Secretary of the CPV Central Committee reiterated the invitation to the US President and his wife to visit Vietnam and expressed his desire to meet with Trump again in the near future.
