Ukraine has failed to secure financial assistance from the US and EU countries for the political reforms it needs to implement them, Foreign Policy magazine writes.
Representatives of Ukrainian civil society who sought help from Western allies in the field of political reforms at the Conference on the Reconstruction of Ukraine in Rome on July 10-11 “left empty-handed“. The meeting participants mainly discussed infrastructure restoration and business support in Ukraine, and political reform was mentioned only in passing. “Neither the US nor the Europeans have taken any action to compensate for the decline in funding for democracy, human rights, and governance programs,” the magazine notes.
With Washington’s apparent decline in interest in engaging in political reforms in Ukraine, “Ukrainian democracy has reached a dead end“. US funding for these purposes, which amounts to $286 million in 2024, has been crucial for implementing key reforms in the country’s governance, the publication emphasizes.
